Pure Barre Brookline

If you’ve spent more than 10 minutes with me, you know about my love affair with Pure Barre – an effective 55 minute workout that seriously lifts, tones and burns.

From the Pure Barre website:

In just 55 minutes you will achieve a full-body workout concentrating on the areas women struggle with the most: hips, thighs, seat, abdominals and arms. The Pure Barre technique is low-impact, protecting your joints by avoiding any bouncing or jumping. Each strength section of the workout is followed by a stretching section in order to create long, lean muscles without bulk.

Despite using a ballet barre in many of the exercises, you do not have to be a dancer. I certainly am not!

I was introduced to PB two years ago, and loved it so much that I officially gave up my gym membership (I was a gym junkie since high school) and stick solely with PB, in addition to long walks around the city and some HIIT workouts at home. Exercise is my me time, where I’m forced away from my phone/computer, and get to enjoy the endorphin rush. In the past, I was a serious spinner, a runner, and a yogi. I was a regular at pump classes and pilates classes, and even raced in a handful of 10k’s, half marathons, and even a triathlon. And while I still love all those forms of exercise, I found myself getting bored after a few months of each one. Somehow, two years into PB, and the classes are as challenging (if not more so) than the first one I took. The more you perfect your form, the harder it seems to get! The instructors are fantastic, the music is entertaining, and the women (and men!) who go there are supportive, friendly, and help foster an enjoyable exercise environment that keeps you coming back for more. In fact, I’m just a few classes away from my 250th class!


Pure Barre was the ONLY thing that made me feel better during my entire pregnancy, and kept me in shape. I was regularly going to class right up until Zack was born. True story: instead of Funk encouraging me to Push! Push! during labor, he told me to Tuck! Tuck! and I swear it helped me get baby Z out. “Tucking” is a PB move where you tuck your pelvis, almost as if you’re getting poked in the belly button. It helps strengthen your core and make all of the movements more effective. Apparently, even childbirth.

Barre does not irritate my hip, which I had surgery on three years ago. After surgery, long runs or intense yoga classes always left my hip hurting, but barre has been the best for it. I’ve also been dealing with back pain for over two years and notice a significant improvement with consistent PB classes. I think it’s from immensely strengthening my core, but regardless of the reason, I’m happy to feel the burn in my bum ANY day over cortisone shots to my back.

Aside from the pregnancy perks and the diminished back pain, I have never been more toned or in shape in my life. Those tiny three pound weights really work wonders! I leave every class feeling stronger, longer, leaner and challenged with every workout.

I’ve had people say to me PB is too expensive, but health and wellness are a priority for me, and I’m happy to pay for fitness that has been so beneficial for me. In fact, I found myself using my way-too-expensive Boston gym membership less and less, wasting loads of money. Not the case with Pure Barre! I register for classes weeks in advance and I never miss a single one.

A few months ago, I noticed a couple of local stores went out of business in my neighborhood, and I said to Funk, “THAT would be a perfect place for a Pure Barre studio.” Apparently Rachel Roberts, owner of PB Newton and Wellesley had the same idea. A few months later I learned Pure Barre Brookline was coming soon! Just when I thought our amazing Brookline neighborhood couldn’t possibly get any better – it did.

    Thanks for introducing me to PB! What an awesome full body workout experience. I had been so hesitant since I have no dance experience but was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t necessary. Can’t wait to join the craze!

    Such a great giveaway! I love getting outside for a run on a nice day, body pump, and hiking with friends! I usually rely on an upbeat station on Pandora to get me through my workouts….lately the Pitbull station has been getting me through!

    My favorite workout these days is Tabata class at Healthworks, and I missed it this morning because of the stupid snow! Boo! I would love to experience a real barre class.

    My favorite workout song these days is Justin Timberlake’s “TKO” – gets me pumped up! My favorite workout is spending an hour doing full-body strength training circuits with an emphasis on core strength and incorporating body weight exercises and plyo metrics. I’m a huge fan of functional training while listening to some upbeat jams 🙂

    I’ve really dropped off the exercise wagon but would love motivation to get back on. Favorite workout was probably Pilates with props at healthworks. Would love to try this!

    My favorite exercise is running, but I have really wanted to try Pure Barre since I heard about it a few months ago. Brookline is such a great location!

    I tried a Barre class recently at my gym and loved it! I spend most of my time running & spinning, and need to get back to more strength training…this would be a perfect excuse!

    Any studio class is my favorite, currently I’m loving Yoga, but Spin classes also motivate me to stay in shape! Would love to give PB a chance.

    I’ve done barre a few times and really like it, but find it hard to maintain bc of the cost. Being a Brookline resident, if def love 5 free weeks – esp since my wedding is only 80 days away!!

    I have watched a friend transform herself at Pure Barre Newton and I have been contemplating finding a class. This location is perfect! My friend posted check ins on Facebook and it was motivating to watch each day and read her posts and pictures. I am going to check Brookline out.

    my favorite workout is definitely running, but I’d love to try PB to balance it out! I have a friend who goes in newton and raves about it!
