Veggie Galaxy, Cambridge MA

Over the weekend, Elizabeth, Jess and I joined another nutrition-nerd pal for brunch at Veggie Galaxy in Cambridge. This was my second time at VG and I was SO excited to go back. Funk and I recently went for lunch and I enjoyed a delicious vegan “omelet” with Taza hot chocolate. Before I even got there, I knew exactly what I wanted to order: Stuffed French Toast. I don’t think I’ve ever had stuffed French toast before even in my pre-veg days, and I haven’t had French toast in years. Years! It was time.

Veggie Galaxy’s stuffed French toast wasn’t just any plain old stuffed French toast. No. This was stuffed with vanilla nut vegan cream cheese, topped with caramelized banana butter, strawberry basil sauce, and maple syrup. Oh, did you just drool on your keyboard? Three out of four of us ordered this, and loved every last bite. And I mean every – yes I ate that entire meal all by myself.

Normally I’m not a brunch type of gal. Because I don’t eat eggs, it kinda rules out quite a few breakfast options, from omelets to pancakes. And I don’t ever feel like spending money on oatmeal or toast at a restaurant when I can make it cheaper and better in my own kitchen. But Veggie Galaxy? That’s brunch I can get used to. They have a huge menu and do have vegetarian options (so you can get real eggs instead of vegan ones if you want) along with an unbelievable looking dessert counter. I had to use all of my will power to resist it. But I will be back…

Ah I’ve been dying to try VG and still haven’t made it there. Have you tried it’s “mother,” Veggie Planet?

I have a few times! It’s good for pizza and rice bowls…nothing you couldn’t make at home and the dining atmosphere is “cozy.” Don’t go on a night of a show (at their club passim) and expect to wait a bit – there might be only 15 or so seats!

I was disappointed in VG when I went. They don’t have a lot of good veggie options, in my opinion. They didn’t even have fresh avocado! I was expecting a tasty array of fresh fruits and veggies. Instead, it really does cater toward vegetarians, not vegans. I did appreciate that they were very clear when I asked them about what was and was not cross-contaminated with gluten.

Really??? I loved it both times. If you do go back, get the stuffed french toast 🙂

I loved Veggie Galaxy, and we’ve driven the hour from our home to eat Sunday brunch there. The tofu “eggs” benedict is terrific. However, their sweet baked goods (cookies, etc.) looked quite greasy and are likely loaded with coconut oil. A word to the wise — just because it’s vegan doesn’t mean it’s cardiac-friendly, and those who want both (myself included) should proceed with caution!

I think my husband got the “eggs” benedict last time! I hear you about the baked goods. Sugar is sugar! My friend said she had the lemon meringue there once and it was better than any real lemon meringue she had ever had before.
